Jewelry Designer Interview

Posted on : May 27 , 2026

Designer and founder Baylee Zwart, the creative force behind the jewelry brand AZLEE.
In this interview, we explore the origins of her creativity and the thoughts behind her craftsmanship through a conversation with her.

What inspired you to become a jewelry designer?

I was working at a non-profit in Guatemala after college and there was a lot of metal-working in the area that I was living in. I had always loved fashion, but had never thought much about jewelry specifically. I had a stone that I wanted a ring made for, and I went around town trying to find the right metalsmith to make it. I ended up going into the jungle to meet with a master metal smith about it, and he asked me if I wanted to make it instead of him. I started studying metal working on my weekends with him, and just fell head over heels in love with being able to design something so special, so precious, that you can wear every day.

Could you tell us about your usual creative process, from the initial idea to the finished piece?

I tend to see pieces in my mind in the middle of the night. If I don’t sketch them then and there by morning I can’t quite remember how the piece worked, moved, looked. So I have a lot of random sketches in random places. I like compiling them together in sketchbooks so they can all live in one place. I tend to go through those books and back to old and new sketches before I start working on a collection to feel reinspired. Since I don’t make the pieces myself anymore, I knew I wanted to work with local jewelers, so we make everything locally in Los Angeles. We have been with the same jewelers for over 10 years now. I see the CADS, waxes, castings, settings, everything every step of the way when we are working on a new concept, its very hands on, and brining pieces to life with my team is still my favorite part of the entire business.

Where do you find inspiration?

I love interior design and museums. I feel incredibly inspired by interior design, architecture, art, furniture and spaces. Exposing myself to that kind of design lights me up, and makes me inspired to create. It doesn’t necessarily directly impact the design of my creations, but seeing others create so beautifully, in a different space than I am, really inspires me to take risks and play in my medium. I also love museums. I love looking backwards to move forward, and have always loved ancient history.

Is there a particular piece or episode that has stayed with you?

I really loved designing our Dew Drop Earrings. I had the vision of them one night and just kept thinking about how to capture the movement I imagined, and also on a technical level, how to make an earring that was part cuff, part earring. There was so much trial and error trying to work out how to have them fit the ear correctly and comfortably. My production manager and I worked so hard on them for so long, and they are still one of my favorite pieces to wear and talk about.

What values or design philosophy are most important to you?

I really value jewelry that can be worn daily. Designing jewelry that can be worn and enjoyed every day, dressed up or down, but still has personality and is high quality is very important to me. I do this by dreaming, but then retraining the designs a bit so that they balance being interesting but versatile and not too specific so that they can be worn with everything. I think when you can create something beautiful and interesting, but in a restrained way, it is very special and matches my personal aesthetic and taste.

Could you share the story of your relationship with Deuxième Classe?

Deuxieme Classe reached out to us in 2019 to work together. We were so excited to be contacted by the team as we had never sold our pieces in Japan and the stores looked beautiful. I have absolutely loved having the opportunity to work with Deuxieme Classe with their amazing team, and wonderful clients. It is so special to me to get to have clients from Japan enjoy our pieces and for us to get to go over there for special events.

Are there any books or music that have influenced you?

Years ago I designed a whole collection listening to Alt-J’s An Awesome Wave.

What is your personal “treasure”?

My baby girl J I am a very new mom.

Among all the places you have visited, which country or place has left the strongest impression on you?

Guatemala was so pivotal since that is where I started my path to creating AZLEE. For art, interiors and history, I have really loved visiting Morocco as I love Islamic architecture.

Is there a place in Japan that you especially like or often visit?

I loved visiting Kyo Amahare in Kyoto for a special tea and dessert tasting. They have such a special garden and tea room, alongside such beautiful art and ceramics.

How do you think jewelry changes depending on the person who wears it?

I think jewelry can be styled in so many ways, more ways than ready to wear, and is a true expression of someone’s taste and personality so I think it takes on a different vibe or energy depending on who wears it, why they wear it and how they style it.

What does jewelry mean to you?

Stories. When you compliment someone on their jewelry, they usually will tell you an entire story about the piece, where they got it, what occasion it marked, who they inherited it from, why they love it.
